Tench,

re: 1Ghz Athlons at costco

You are right tench this is terrible news for AMD.

And in a few weeks the world is gonna get flooded with 1Ghz AThlons from 2nd tier suppliers in US as well as folks in Europe and Japan.

This is even worse news for AMD.

As nobody in europe or far east can afford or want a 1Ghz processor.

Oh my god this is so terrible for poor ole AMD.

While Intel ekes out a few 1Ghz PIII's a week for high end US consumption.

Surely Intel knows best!!!

BTW....care to sell me your AMD shares cheap as they are surely doomed.

regards,

Kash

RE:"I guess when 1 GHz Athlons show up in Costco, the segmentation thing gets trashed. I don't know why anyone who shops for Compaq systems at Costco would want a 1 GHz system, and I don't know why anyone who wants a 1 GHz system would shop at Costco for it. Like I said before, perhaps AMD is trying to target a market that cares more about 500 MHz Celerons (or even 600 MHz Athlon/Pentium III) than about 1 GHz Athlons"

Oh jeez Tench, now you're telling us that Costco members don't want or need all that Mhz...
So we all agree but it doesn't change the FACT that when people buy they look at the Mhz first...it's called c o m p a r a t i v e shopping.

AMD is selling 1000Mhz Athlons to COSTCO because that's what Costco wants to buy. It's Costco that does the ordering. OTOH, ...maybe Costco is miss ordering....
Maybe they are actually selling them...(novel idea)

Where do you think people should shop for 1000 Mhz systems...?
Best Buy? CompUSA? Circuit City? Gateway? Maybe Dell? Wait, Dell can't ship any for a month or longer <G>. So maybe people go to Costco...I'll tell you why...
1. They can take it home right now unlike Dell and Gateway.
2. They can take it back up to thirty days later, full refund, no questions asked, no 30 foot return line...
Best Buy, CompUSA and Circuit city give you 14 days and I think Circuit City wants a restock charge.
That's why I like Costco...

Jim

Ten - Re: "I guess when 1 GHz Athlons show up in Costco, the segmentation thing gets trashed. "

On Friday, a local Costco in the Bay Area had three Compaq 1 GHz Athlon PCs for sale.

Looks like AMD has finally penetrated the Corporate Market !

Tench, re: 1 gig/costco

Actually Costco has a unique retail strategy. They want to have highend products at low prices, they don't want to stock what other retailers stock. The perception they are trying to foster is high end value. This is a short term coup for AMD.

The downside is that it's essentially one sale, usually not an ongoing program. Costco will switch to the next value product in a heartbeat. It also sets a low retail price for the product (usually 10% over cost), and other retailers will be very reluctant to compete head on. Believe me, the Intel sales force will be saying to customers "You want to compete with Costco?" You kind of mortgage your future for one big revenue pop.
