Perhaps you should recall that statement.

As Intel is offering its high end processors into the retail segment ONLY as well.

Could it be that Costco decided to order 1000 Mhz Athlon PCs from Compaq and Compaq decided it was a good idea to sell them to them?
Not only that but Costco "could" actually sell some.
I think Best Buy, Sams, BJs, Circuit City, Office Depot, Staples (I believe you can order one now via Compaq), OfficeMax etc. will be selling them soon. OfficeMax for sure with Gateway inside the stores since Gateway already has them. Meanwhile Dell offers a 1000Mhz model with a slight delay.
