<I wouldn't be surprised if sledgehammer underperformed willamete (i also wouldn't be surprised at the reverse.) >

In this industry anything is possible but I think it is not pragmatic to think that a product that has not yet taped out would be worse than a competitors product that has just seen first silicon.

<I don't know how anyone could really talk with certainty comparing two platforms that aren't out yet.>

Since Wilamette started getting close to tapeout in Q4 '99, some of the Intel long's can't do anything but but talk about Wilamette (understandably so given how bad a shape Intel is with PIII). And as long as we are talking vapor, it is fair to compare to vapor .

<I would be really surprised if sledgehammer does come out in Q1 2001 though.>

I would be too. I would be very comfortable with a Q3 intro.

<If it does I might hang on to my and a lot longer than I'm currently planning.>

This, probably, reflects the sentiment of many on this thread.

tcd,

By the way my german friends called after we posted yesterday afternoon. They were familiar with the game...it sounds a little like monopoly....but they had not played it yet. They were impressed that I knew about it.

Score 1 for the American!
