Hello NR,
You are correct that there are very little expectations
from CPQ as demonstrated in this audio. In fact, in this interview the possibility of a shortage was mentioned with the analyst predicting no shortfall but anything could happen. There is also a possibility of an upside surprise
(nothing like hedging a bet). As Victor, El, and others mentioned and as management has demonstrated, non-core assets could be factored to meet/exceed the estimates but
probably won't garner much W.S. support.
So it looks like CPQ can pretty much complete the writedowns
without retribution PROVIDING they supply guidance
and a really silver tongued devil for analysts.

Riche,
I think MC was saying, there will be no specific write off for this. The expenses will be treated as normal expense items as they occur. In that case, there should be no flexibility or delaying the recognition of expenses.

I'm not a CPA, but we got on this slippery slope by recognizing income before it was realized. (That was stuffing the channel.) Compaq needs to keep the books meticulously clean. IMHO MC was indicating that with his comment on the Alpha WIN NT expenses. The analysts will jump on anything that looks off base accounting wise.
