According to the Def14A's for 97, 99 Bill Owned 271 million shares (22.3% of the total common) in September 1997; and 930 million (14.3 of the total common) in September 99. Since then he has sold about 22.2 million shares which looks like a decline of about 33 per cent of his share in MSFT over the past 2 years or so. Melissa also owned about 100,000 shares in 97.
Bill has been funding their foundation, and he has to eat, I guess, but it looks to me as if he is very rationally easing up on his share of Microsoft. I'd done the same for similar, but different reasons.
Oh, BTW, those Gates wealth clocks are useless. No one has any idea of how much he has socked away elsewhere. My guess is he has $100 billion or so in microsoft, and another 30 billion in his socks (which is why he walks so funny).
