Hello Gerald,

I have a question for you. Why is DOJ is even talking to MSFT? Judge Jackson has already made up his mind aobut the
sentence, and it will be steep. So, what DOJ had to gain, O wonder.

Thanks,

Yaacov

Also, the 3-strikes laws keep violent offenders in way past the time where they're most likely to commit such crimes. The average violent offender is a young male, and generally as males get older they "mellow out." The 3 strikes law doesn't take this into account, but I'm sure it makes the handwringers feel better.

FWIW
Andy

"There's a case in California where a homeless man/bum/whatever was sentenced to mandatory major prison time under the Three Strikes law for stealing a slice of pizza since he had two other non-recent priors (non-violent theft, I believe)"

That's definitely a waste of taxpayer dollars, I agree. OTOH, the bum shouldn't have been stealing pizza. Since he had two prior arrests for theft, he obviously is a slow learner.

"Whether or not it's "fair" for an 18-year-old who pleads guilty to statutory rape for having sex with his 16-year-old girl friend to have to file as a "sex offender" and notify the neighbors when he moves in for the rest of his life is something that I won't go into here."

That does sound rather draconian, and would certainly never happen north of Cali. Are you certain of your facts? Up here you have to be a pretty severe child molester in the "highly likely to offend" category before neighbors have to be notified.

Aren't you the same guy who lambasted me for being "liberal?" And here you don't think possession of "recreational" drugs is so bad? What kind of conservative ARE you?
