I'm just trying to hypothesize what Intel could do to go above 1GHz. I'm assuming all the critical path work has been done and no one or several paths stand out. The most likely is an improvement to the device design. Even a 50A reduction in minimum channel length (at same Vt and Ioff) will probably improve performance by 6%-7%. This is certainly possible. Perhaps, a further increase to 1.75V Vcc resulting in another 3% in performance. Since 10 year gate oxide reliability is modeled based on stress oven data at accelerated voltages, Intel may push it even closer to their perceived limits. Another possibility would be to do an all level shrink (10%-20%) while maintaining the same minimum device of the current stepping. I would guess that would give them at least another 8% in performance. Possibly even accepting much lower yields at the extreme limit of the process to achieve another speed grade. They've all ready demonstrated limited launches twice (800MHz and 1 GHz) Maybe even doing Copper BEOL which might give them 3%-5%. I assume Intel will do what ever it has to to remain competitive. So, none of this is necessary if AMD doesn't push much past 1GHz soon or if Willamette is ready early. (by July)
