Not disconnected - the "personal directory" would be a fully functional "downsized" version of a directory that runs completely on my personal computer (think along the lines of Personal WebServer from MSFT). In this sense, I would have the ability to store information about many things (not just myself by the way) and share it with others.

I would create "replicas" that I could store via a hosted service so I can access my personal information without having to leave my PC on & connected at home. And even "cache" some of this information to my PDA and other PCs I use so the information is available to me all the time.

Synchronization of information would either be via a policy I set (every time I log on and attach to the internet) or via user input (click a button to sync info while logged on).

Now, I don't have to worry about my identity being stored in many places through many websites. Instead, I would store my personal information in my personal directory and allow these sites to "read" the information we agree is necessary to create the "relationship". In this scenario, I maintain some control over the sharing of information (1st degree at least).

I don't meant to clutter this forum with the execution of this idea but it's VERY important for Novell to get this idea moving. If they really want to revolutionize the internet and user experience, they need to explore this idea further. With "federation" in place, creating communities is a matter of "joining" personal directories together within a shared namespace.

If not, then others will and others will win (IMHO) the internet Directory game.

Internet Appliances Will Launch REAL Internet....

>>A disconnectable, and securely auto-synchronizable
personal directory is a great idea!>>

Ok, I'm just imaging I'm on stage with Drew Major today.

Let's try to think really, really....BIG!!

What can I say which will massively EXCITE and EMPOWER the imagination of the world?

Remember the basement analogy?

If you don't here goes again:

For centuries and centuries the world has been trapped in a dark, smoke-filled basement. The doors have been locked and windows shut. MONEY - which is nothing more than anonymous personal trust - has been made by those adept at subterfuge, agendas, politics, withholding information, etc. The system as it was set up naturally rewarded companies, corporations and governments who worked together ensure there was a fine balance between political fixes, public posturing and personal freedom.

The potential for personal freedom has always been there, but the Old system did all it could to confuse people into thinking it was there. After all, in a dark, smoke filled room those who get bought by money will always feed off of those who are innocently unaware.

The radical overthrow the system 60's came and went, but nothing happened because we never made it out of the basement.

Well, the REAL Internet is finally bringing the world out of the basement.

And the REAL Internet just began.

From here on out, the REAL Internet will turn upside down every traditional company, corporation and government for people are going to massively move out of the basement and into the light where - by simple common awareness and through the realization of conscience - we will more completely and consistantly get into the habit of helping and serving others.

Telling the truth, being open, helping and serving will become the ONLY way to go.

For the REAL Internet is shining a massive light on everyone and the one's who are acting like deer and elephants in headlights are those who simply do not know what to do.

Why?

Because the REAL Internet will FORCE everyone out of the basement and into the light.

Everyone will have to:

- tell the truth.
- help
- serve
- be open
- give energy
- be positive
- etc. etc.

For the game has completely inverted from Old to New.

The Old era of making money - anonymous trust - based on withholding information and data and restricting the growth and development of knowledge is OVER.

The New Era of sharing information and data freely, and enouraging the growth and development of knowledge - while earning REAL trust - between and among REAL people (ie. human capital) - is IN.

Think of the massive worldwide transformational implications that will be forced - NOW, not in 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8+ years - when EVERYONE has to quickly come to the realization that getting on this New stage of SERVICE - helping and serving others - is the ONLY way to go.

What we've seen over the past several years in technology DOT.COM circles is a complete and total CHARADE.

I've simply ventured deep inside this Land of Oz and I'm here to pull the curtain away to expose The Wizard. All the smoke, fire and fear that's been blown at mankind over thousands of years is just that - ie. smoke, fire and fear.

The Wizard is a nice man who was simply brought up to learn how to follow what his Dad and mom told him he should do: blow smoke, make fire and create fear.

And this is exactly what we've been getting in the news, on TV, in movies, etc. Kids love it. Parents can point fingers at all that's bad. Works wonders!

And if that's all you did that in the Old model you were guaranteed to MAKE MONEY!!!

Well I'm here to say that this is all a bunch of crap. For there's a REAL Gold rush going on which will grow massively and on a leveraged basis throughout the world from here on out.

The REAL Gold rush will be centered on this New Stage where REAL TRUST - not money (ie. anonymous trust) - is shared and earned between and among people who "feel, see and understand" these truths.

And now I'm finally back to INTERNET appliances.

Where does Novell fit in all this?

And where do you think we are going to deposit all this NEW, REAL trust that's been earned through acts of open, shared service between and among INDIVIDUALS??

The answer:

Deep inside these great, personal, trusted, NEW....REAL INTERNET appliances which are going to be cropping up all over these secure community-centric server farms located all over the world.

Internet appliances will allow me to have the complete, secure, freedom to populate MY data, MY preferences, MY information, MY history. But more importantly, these internet appliances will NOT be owned or controlled by the big portals or media companies. They will be owned/controlled by INDIVIDUALS.

Internet appliances will place a much needed "third rail" of balance and honesty between "me" - the consumer - and companies, corporations and governments the world over that want to claim they OWN me, OWN my time, OWN my trust.

INDIVIDUALS will then force communities, companies, networks, groups, associations, neighborhoods to "come to them" through these neutral technology Switzerlands of this New World.

And individuals who have truely earned my time and trust can interact directly with these Internet appliances on my behalf to keep the anonymous trust marketing-hungret company heathens at bay.

But there will be this magic of reciprocity at work. The more I as an individual reclaim my personal energy, the more I want to share it with others - through acts of helping and serving.

This New Era will shape up very, very fast. The arbitrage from Old to New will be massively, massively FAST. We are right smack in the early stages of a worldwide massive transformational era. Just look around you. Look at all the deer and elephants in headlights. Look at all the people rushing out of the cold, dark, smokey basements.

AOL, Yahoo, Amazon, corporations, companies and governments will not know what hit them.

The Old DOT.COM models of the past few years will all be exposed as one massive charade.

Yahoo, AOL, Amazon, corporations, companies and governments will all be forced to reckon with the massive exodus of people who've been populating these cold, dark, smokey basements.

Everyone of these DOT.COMs will be forced, radically and totally to complete open up to this new INDIVIDUAL power and energy. For the Old Model has totally and completely lost control. And money, as we know it, will be very, very confused.

For people will quickly relearn and understand the values of openness, risk, truth and forgiveness. We will be quickly learning that the REAL Internet begins and is powered by REAL - not anonymous (ie. money) TRUST.

For, to use Paul's term, the Internet is nothing more, no less than The Peoples Network. Everything is owned by US - individuals - not THEM - companies. Trust and believe this one single fact and you will have found the little hole in the eye of the needle that the camel must somehow find it's way through.

If you "get" this New Model, Novell can set itself up so that all of Drew Major's Internet appliances will be purchased by the power and energy of PEOPLE - INDIVIDUALS - interacting, helping and serving within, around and across various communities throughout the world.

And all it will take is a few individuals sharing this energy inside communities to power this New REAL trend.

The REAL gold rush is on.

Peace.

GO!!

Hello Doshi,

I had hoped to see you at Brainshare ... I looked forward to getting a chance to catch up with you.

> A disconnectable, and securely auto-synchronizable
> personal directory is a great idea!

I wanted to offer a couple of other comments about Brainshare ... and this is a very good starting point!

The attendance at Brainshare was huge ... and I really have to say that I was surprised at the large number of "first-time" attendees. This is a very good indication of the growing interest in Novell and their products. In a couple of sessions where the audience was asked, maybe one third indicated it was their first Brainshare!

The Technology Lab/Partners Lab was also incredible. There were more booths, and developers, and partners presenting a wide range of products and services. It took me two different days to get through the entire set of booths in the time that I had available. There was a lot of innovation.

One of the really cool things that I saw, was a micro-NDS that was able to run in a Palm Pilot ... and the accompanying client. They had a small demo application running. The other was more interesting ... they had their IDC development center showing a "Personal NDS" that appears to be the same one discussed in the press release earlier this year.

The "Personal NDS" has some "caching" capabilities to store directory information that has been read from a corporate directory. But it also appears to be a complete "stand-alone" Personal Directory also ... although the message was not quite clear. I hope that Novell realizes that this is the "browser" in the developing marketplace of personal identity management. If they offer it free for "non-commercial" use, then I have found the ideal platform for a wide range of personal identity applications. We'll see what they do ...

There was also a good presence from the "appliance" products partners. Caching was well supported, and a series of applications which are written on this proxy/cache platform. Again, even in this space, IMHO, applications are the key ...

I was equally impressed with many other products, and internal projects presented ... eGuide, etc.

Novell has always had the engineers, and the ability to produce the technology and products ... will they get them into the market is the question ...

(I want that Personal Directory! ;-)
