Robt. Timberg has a good take on this in "The Nightingale's Song." In writing about rigors imposed on lowest classmen at the Naval Academy he reports that the system is set up to give people "too much" to handle and observing how they handle it. Excellent book, BTW -- esp. in light of John McCain's recent exposure to the limelight. M

Once again, your cultural anthropology comes up lacking. I have to protest your characterization of "primitive" society. That is mere racial snobbery. Many tribal societies have managed to transform inner physical dominance rivalry into aesthetic competition, where the elegance and originality of one's hair do, or facial makeup, or the rarity of the feathers in the headdress establish dominance. It is quite common for one's command of poetry or genealogy or music establishes overall dominance and warrior order membership. Compared to us, I would say we are much more primitive and dysfunctional as well. I know of no successful warrior societies where the warrior is required to take a blow without protest or revenge. In 13th century chivalry, even a simple squire was expected to challenge a king for an insult to his honor. Boot camp discipline is just a way to reduce a free man to a slave and produces thugs who will kill children and bomb civilians if they are commanded to. That's really primitive.
