MikeM:

AFCI is a one-trick pony

My response would be that granted AFCI is just a single pony, but it is surely not limited to one-trick. The UMC1000 is an extremely versatile product, or more appropriately family products that functions at the interface of quite a number of platforms.

Now AFCI does have products to market that install at the CO, nor in the ATM cloud, nor any place along a carrier's backbone. Its product line, for the present, is limited to the "last mile" where the fiber meets the copper, the coax, or the "airwaves." The focus of new product development is toward the subscriber. IMHO, there is where the greatest growth will be, and I think there is where there have been few players in the past, and now the big boys "want in."

Sorry for the cutoff, but gotta go to dinner.
