more news Tuesday April 4, 2:03 am Eastern Time Company Press Release STMicroelectronics, Lernout & Hauspie, Altec Lansing and Keyware Technologies Develop Ultra Safe Voice-Activated Hands-Free Car Phone Solution System-on-chip device, microcontroller chip and embedded software allow voice activated dialing, speech readout of text messages, noise/echo canceling and speaker verification GENEVA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 4, 2000-- STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM - news) today announced with Lernout & Hauspie, Altec Lansing and Keyware Technologies the joint development of a highly integrated solution for hands-free car cellphone kits that enhances road safety by replacing distracting keypads and displays with a voice interface. Already selected by telecom companies such as Telit, it will be used in end products that will reach consumers this year. Based on ST's Euterpe(TM) digital voice processor chip, the new solution performs voice activated dialing, text-to-speech conversion of incoming text messages, noise/echo cancellation and biometric verification of the speaker's identity. The 24-bit fixed point digital signal processor core in the Euterpe chip supports leading-edge voice processing software from Lernout & Hauspie, Altec Lansing and Keyware Technologies, recognized leaders in the field of digital audio, voice processing and biometrics. In addition to the Euterpe chip, the new solution also includes a microcontroller based on ST's popular ST10 processor core with highly integrated input/output peripherals that manages the dialog between the cellular phone and an optional display plus interfacing to the car stereo and other car functions. It also performs some pre-processing functions for incoming text messages. ST will integrate the hardware and software elements into a single package and market the complete solution to manufacturers of cellphones and other electronic equipment such as telematics boxes, both directly and through the development partners. ``By bringing together ST's advanced hardware plus best-in-class software from leading voice processing companies, we provide to system makers a very fast route to bring to market voice-enabled cellphones specially optimized for tough automotive conditions,' commented Sergio Garue, General Manager of STMicroelectronics Audio & Automotive Division. Among the first companies to adopt the new hands-free solution is Telit Mobile Terminals, a European leader in cellular phone network infrastructure and the only manufacturer of cellular and satellite terminals in Italy. ``We have chosen to adopt this solution because it is the first fully integrated design for the noisy car environment,' commented Massimo Zanzi, CEO and Managing Director of Telit, ``and we will implement it in both hands-free car kits and telematics applications. We are committed to providing our customers with products that enhance road safety by adding voice activation and incoming SMS messages reproduced by voice without distracting the driver and at the same time canceling background noise to make the conversation crystal clear.' The embedded software offered for the Euterpe processor includes Lernout & Hauspie's ASR311 voice recognition package plus the TTS3000 text-to-speech conversion package. Lernout & Hauspie's voice recognition allows the simple implementation of speaker independent voice control functions with both a standard vocabulary that can be used with no user training, plus user defined words such as the names of people to call. The TTS3000 package converts any ASCII text string into high quality speech, correctly interpreting numbers and abbreviations in addition to standard words. ``Lernout & Hauspie enables key customer benefits in automotive technology: safety and productivity. We offer a one-stop shop for scalable and complete speech solutions and support for the automotive industry; therefore we are proud to work with STMicroelectronics on this car phone solution,' said Willy van de Voorde, Lernout & Hauspie's Vice-President for Sales in Europe. Altec Lansing contributes to this project Clarix(TM), the noise suppression and echo canceling software that increases the clarity of communications, reducing driver stress. This software also performs automatic gain control and other voice enhancement functions. Noise suppression removes from the outgoing telephone signal the background noise of the car. ``We are thrilled to be making a contribution to this significant solution and to be working with such forward thinking companies,' stated Tommy Freadman, Chief Technical Officer of Altec Lansing. Biometric Voice Verification software provided by Keyware Technologies protects the system from unauthorized access by using the voice of the owner as the password to the system. This personal authentication method is the only secure way to enable the driver to concentrate on traffic while accessing text messages, names and phone numbers in a private database of contacts. ``We recognize that in today's fast-paced world people will always be tempted to do two things at once,' commented Francis Declercq, President and CEO of Keyware Technologies. ``Through the use of hands-free voice verification we can reduce the risks associated with 'mobile driving' while achieving our strategy of reaching a broad audience with a secure and convenient solution.' biz.yahoo.com Good Luck Don
