Vman,

Well, since the inventors of CDMA, ERICY, agreed to pay royalties that are the same for any flavor of 3G CDMA, it appears cross licensing won't affect payments made to QCOM. There are 13 other licensees to back that up. We'll see how the remaining folks fare.

It was good to hear this assertion that Ericy will pay Qcom royalties on ALL flavors of CDMA. Would you by any chance, have a link which substantiates this? I was just rereading the press release following the settlement of their case with Qcom a year ago, and even that was far from equivocal as far as WCDMA was concerned.

Your assistance on this would be much appreciated.

TIA,

MA.

Hi Valueman,

<< What then is W-CDMA? >>

A darned distraction. <g> ... and unfortunately, as it relates to this mode of CDMA, which as UTRA will be the the air interface of the evolved GSM 3G network UMTS, I am forming the opinion that the IP battle is not as clear cut for this flavor as I once naively assumed.

The rapid commitment by the GSM community of a non CDMA air interface (GPRS) for 2.5G and the path the UWCC seems very committed to, took me a bit by surprise. Going back to mid summer of last year I was reasonably optimistic that we might see some cdma overlays of existing GSM networks in some cases. Perhaps that can still happen, but I see no evidence yet, which was what I meant by. "to the contrary".

<< Well, since the inventors of CDMA, ERICY, agreed to pay royalties that are the same for any flavor of 3G CDMA, it appears cross licensing won't affect payments made to QCOM >>

I guess we will have to wait till the smoke settles, and I am beginning to think that that wait may be longer than I originally anticipated. I am also of the opinion that Qualcomm will be affected by cross licensing (particularly as it relates to WCDMA/UTRA) but remain optimistic that we will be net positive.

None of the above affects my confidence in QCOM as a ltb&h, and at the moment QCOM remains my largest holding.
