William,
No, I don't think Microsofts products are overpriced.
If you don't like MS Office...use Corel office suite or IBMs products or a bunch of others.
If you think Microsoft charges too much for IE5, pay more for Netscape.
If you don't want to pay for Front Page, use Homesite or Dreamweaver. They are considered better.
If you don't like Windows, get a MAC or use Linux.

RE:"And think about this: Because Microsoft is selling more and more copies of its software, it could easily drop its prices, and still increase profits, but it doesn't"

And OPEC could easily drop its prices, CocaCola could drop theirs, so could Lawyers, Doctors, supermarkets, retaurants, newspapers etc....
Heck, for that matter the government could tell everyone what to charge...eh' Comrade?

I'll tell you what's going to happen...the consumer is going to get the shaft and the Lawyers will line their pockets. After the US government beats it's domestic companies in the dirt, some foreign companies will step up and fill the void, all subsidized by their governments...and the liberal "politically correct" crowd will think this is wonderfully fair and say nothing.
We will open the paper and read a wonderfully written article on this written by an author with no clue.

Jim

Re: So, the bottom line is, Microsoft is getting its money from people who are paying exorbitant prices because Microsoft is a monopoly, so it can charge whatever price it wants.
What have you been smoking William? Now you're saying consumers are so dumb that they but MSFT products b/c they are forced to? Mac's are much easier for the casual computer user but since apple is 1/10th the size of msft b/c of POOR BUSINESS EXECUTION AND POOR DECISION MAKING consumers have not chosen the mac as the de facto standard for pc's...I've seen poor software and IMO msft has a broad line of software that I would call "great" but not "excellent" and most people who use it love it and continue to buy it for this reason. Its business as usual for MSFT until the appeals are wrapped-up for MSFT as far as I understand it.

But look at MS Office. That was free at one time, but now that Microsoft's monopoly is established in the office suite, Microsoft charges quite a bit of money, because they're free to do so.

When was Office ever free? I've used Word since Word 2.0 and I never received it free. No company I worked at received it free. Maybe you are referring to MS Works which comes free on most the machines I've purchased. Believe me, this is not MS Office.

WCS - re: But look at MS Office. That was free at one time
Not only was office NEVER free, it has gone down in price over the years, not even counting inflation. Volume pricing today is about half of what the components would have cost when Office was first introduced, and there are more programs in the suite at that price, with a lot more capability.

This is the opposite of the effect you suggest.
