The empirical evidence usually comes out about 6 months or a year too late. My evidence is that I spoke to a manager of a Ritz Camera store in a popular mall near my home and he said that holiday sales between film (SLR/point-and-shoot) and digital cameras were neck-and-neck and that he fully expects digital cameras to outpace SLR's this calendar year.

This is anecdotal information only, but the kind that needs to be gauged by the source. If you want empirical evidence you can buy a report from IDT in 6 months that will cost you about 5 grand. Some people like graphs. I like pressing the flesh and pumping people in the know for their personal impressions.
