OT B: Juniper Networks: Juniper Networks enables UUNET STM-64/OC-192c production network -- Breakthrough M160 router deployed (COMTEX) APR 3, 2000, M2 Communications - Juniper Networks has announced that UUNET, an MCI WorldCom company, is upgrading its U.S. production network to STM-64/OC-192c speed (10 gigabits per second) using the new Juniper Networks M160(tm) Internet backbone routers. This is a four-fold improvement over the current network speed of STM-16/OC-48 (2.4 gigabits per second). UUNET is activating STM-64/OC-192c circuits between Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C. using Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology. Juniper Networks and UUNET have been pioneers in the development of the MPLS standard, the industry's latest approach to optimising network performance. By using MPLS in their network, UUNET achieves two important goals - it delivers the highest level of service to its customer base while aggressively ramping its network capacity to meet growing customer demand. UUNET plans to expand its nationwide rollout of STM-64/OC-192c circuits running MPLS to include Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Sacramento in the third quarter of this year, with other major U.S. hubs to follow throughout 2000. "Our goal is to provide our customers with the highest level of reliability and superior network performance," said Kevin Boyne, senior vice president of global technology operations, UUNET. "UUNET chose the M160 router because it is one of the first to support OC-192c circuits thus far and because it meets our scalability requirements for the network." The M160 router is the first platform to support 10 Gigabits per second (STM-64/OC-192c) circuits with wire-rate packet forwarding, handling an aggregate bandwidth of 160 gigabits per second (Gbps) with packet forwarding rates of 160 million packets per second (Mpps). Given the existing reliability and scalability of the UUNET network, the M160 router running proven JUNOS(tm) Internet software will enhance the speed and predictable performance of the company's network. "Leading-edge capabilities such as the industry's first full performance STM-64/OC-192c interfaces and the powerful traffic engineering features of MPLS, give UUNET a solution that is second to none. This in turn, gives UUNET customers the opportunity to deliver a new generation of Internet services," noted Scott Kriens, chief executive officer and president of Juniper Networks. "With the addition of the M160 platform with STM-64/OC-192c interfaces to our high-performance router family of M20(tm) and M40(tm) routers, Juniper Networks delivers the most complete set of products for high bandwidth IP infrastructure."
