IDC Ranks Emulex Number One in Worldwide Supplier Revenue for Fibre Channel Host Adapters

Emulex Leads Merchant (non-captive) Supplier Market With 41%
Share

COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 4, 2000-- Emulex Corp. (Nasdaq:EMLX - news), the world's largest independent supplier of fibre channel host adapters, Tuesday announced that it was ranked the number one fibre channel host bus adapter provider, in worldwide supplier revenue, by IDC.

In its report issued today, IDC ranked Emulex first in worldwide supplier revenues, at 41.3% of the Merchant Supplier (non-captive) market and 26.5% of the total Supplier Shares (includes captive) market for fibre channel host bus adapters in calendar year 1999, on the strength of a 170% revenue growth from the previous year. IDC forecasts the market for fibre channel host bus adapters to grow approximately 60% annually to more than $1.7B by 2003.

Emulex's share of the total market (including captive vendors) increased from the prior year's 21.3%, driven by ongoing momentum in the UNIX sector of the market. The UNIX sector, which was to reach approximately 67% of the fibre channel SAN market in 1999, is expected to continue to lead the market through 2002, growing 58% per year. (Source: IDC's Storage Systems Bulletin 18120, Jan. 1999, 1998 Worldwide Fibre Channel and Storage Area Network Market Forecast and Review.)

Emulex OEM design wins, which in earlier years were comprised largely of UNIX solutions, have more recently been dominated by Windows implementations. In the last year, Emulex has also captured OEM design wins for Windows solutions at many of the world's largest storage and server suppliers, including Avid, Compaq, Comparex, EMC, Fujitsu-Siemens, Hitachi, MTI, NEC and Unisys.

Most recently, Emulex gained entry into the Hewlett-Packard environment for the first time as its LP8000 adapter was qualified by Hewlett-Packard for use with its HP SureStore E Disk Array XP256 in Windows environments.

Although Windows-based fibre channel SAN revenue was forecasted to reach only 29% of the worldwide SAN fibre channel storage system revenue in 1999, it is expected to be the fastest growing segment, experiencing a 112% compound annual growth rate through 2002, according to the same IDC Bulletin 18120.

``As the demand for networked storage increases, the need for fibre channel technology and products will continue to accelerate,' said Robert Gray, research director, IDC.

``As larger storage area networks are deployed across a broader cross-section of the market, high-performance and scalable solutions will become increasingly important. A significant growth opportunity exists for companies that supply scalable solutions that provide the required performance and investment protection for customers,' he added.

``Emulex invested early in developing a powerful and flexible architecture that provides customers with significant advantages in performance, flexibility and upgradeability,' said Paul Folino, president and CEO of Emulex.

``This technology leadership enabled us to form important OEM partnerships with the world's leading server and storage providers and establish our position in the market, and we are pleased that IDC's data substantiates our position as the number one supplier. As the world's leading supplier of fibre channel host adapters, we will continue to invest in technology development and maintain our commitment to developing the world's best fibre channel products,' he added.
