MCI fiber optics line cut, repair seen shortly

NEW YORK, April 5 (Reuters) - MCI WorldCom Inc. said Wednesday that a fiber optics telephone line was cut by accident near Newark, N.J., affecting one of its many routes along the eastern seaboard.
The company said the line was cut around 2 p.m. by a contractor and that work on splicing the line back together should be completed shortly. Customer traffic has been put on alternate paths, according to MCI spokeswoman Linda Laughlin.
Laughlin said she did not know many customers using the voice and data line were affected but that the reach of the route ran from as far south as Washington D.C. to as north as Maine.
"During a cut you don't know how many customers are affected because not all of them are using the phone at the same time or accessing the Internet. Our No. 1 concern is getting our customers back up in service," she said.
The company declined to disclose how many customers it has in the area.
