That is a fairly common experience for students. Students, especially curious ones, look into and get involved with all kinds of things they wouldn't think of trying back in smallville. They are in a transitory environment where by through exposure and involvement they often pick up some life time benefits. Of course many of the things they check out at college they check back in when they leave or soon after.

A common thing for guys is to see who can get the reputation for drinking the most beer, getting naked with the most strangers, acting wild at football games and doing generally the craziest things.

And yet they don't typically behave this way in mainstream society. Why do you suppose that is? What is your point?

By "smart", I'm referring to more than just intelligence or IQ. Intelligence plus the good sense to function effectively on a long term basis. Intelligent people are not immune from doing dumb things.

I'd be curious to know the rest of the story. Do you know where he is and what he's doing today? And, of course, whether he is still a regular user?

Many people are able to use drugs for a short time in their life and go on apparently no worse for it. Many aren't. And I have yet to know of someone continuing this on a long-term basis without seriuos problems.
