The point, I assume, though I should perhaps not speak for nihil, is that being smart and smoking dope are not necessarily incompatible. I also suspect that a lot more people than you realize continue to use low-level drugs after their transition to mainstream society; they are simply more discreet about it, as one would expect.

I personally think marijuana is a much more effective social lubricant than alcohol: far less tendency to cause violent behaviour, far fewer undesirable side effects, and a good deal more fun. Unfortunately, since one is illegal and the other undesirable, I have to eschew both, being a family type of guy. But legal factors aside, I think smoking dope is a lot smarter than drinking, and I think you'd find that there are a pretty good number of smart people out there indulging in the occasional toke.

My point is Brumar asked. I answered. I've known a lot of brilliant dopers. In some occupations -- like computing -- I think marijuana use is very common.
