Jim - Re:"Who buys lunch?"

When I was designing microprocessor-based CRT terminals in the '70s I was wined and dined by National Semiconductor, Signetics, Motorola, AMD, etc. All but one time we bought from Intel. I once personally placed the largest order that Intel had received for the 8080 microprocessor (2000 units). The one time we bought from National Semi almost ruined my career and our product line. We discovered too late that things that Intel did automatically to help you design in and use their product were a mystery to the other guys.

So I fully understand that Dell talks endlessly with the "other guys". Dell also does it to keep Intel aware that it has options, I'm sure.

And the point may come when Dell decides it's in their best interest to dabble in the AMD arena. So both parties have an interest in keeping up the dialog. When the other guys used to come to see me in the '70s, they knew we were an Intel house, but they always felt that they had either a better widget and/or a better deal. In retrospect they were almost universally wrong. Fortunately, my company and my career recovered, but we both had learned a hard lesson.

Somehow, I'm sure that you will misinterpret this story.

You always look at alternatives, but you look REAL careful at the guys trying to move in on someone else's

Jim, <Who buys lunch?>

Probably Jerry Sanders himself, considering he's the one who wants to win Dell more than Dell wants to buy AMD. Remember some time back when Jerry declared that he has almost all of the top OEMs, and Dell should be joining the pack soon? This was well before Michael Dell's "lunatic fringe" comments back in January.
