I confess that I skimmed it also - a friend's copy. But the verbose foreword/ biography fascinated me, since it was this sheltered immigrant scion's first real encounter with counterculture. It left an impression. By the time I got to college in '79, it was all history. I didn't find anything like it on-campus except tatters and reminiscences. Speed had displaced trips as the campus drug, and I was flatly uninterested in speed. And coke struck me as "a poor value", lol!
