This is getting seriously paranoid. First the theory was that W-CDMA does not exist. When the DoCoMo trial started, that theory changed - now W-CDMA exists, but is not commercially viable. When Japan Telecom made a W-CDMA order, the theory changed again - now W-CDMA may be commercially viable, but seriously late compared to cdma2000.

Now we have a Japanese IS-95 executive on record saying that it's actually cdma2000 that is seriously late - so we get theory number four. Theory number 4 is that the DDI decision isn't really a decision. It's a demonic plot by scheming Japanese salarimen!! How's that for scary? So DDI is badmouthing cdma2000, even though this is the standard they secretly desire. It all makes sense now.

Then again - how about Occam's Razor? The simplest explanation is this: W-CDMA really is real, it really is viable and it really is way ahead of cdma2000. This way we don't need to assume any complex conspiracy theories. Everything falls neatly in place; operators bidding 5 billion dollars for W-CDMA licenses, SK Telecom collaborating with Nokia, South America planning GSM-1800 networks, Hutchison planning GSM-1800 in Australia.

"Nokia knows what it is doing" is the only theory that explains all of these developments. Put not your faith in So-Cal hype, mucho. Place it in the hands of Finnish know-how.
