mr. mark, thank you for the tip to disable the 'new floppy' check. I had not known it was active and disabled it. I wonder how many more useless [for me] checks there may be.

PS: I noticed RAM costs about half of what it was last fall,
when I added some. I saw a Fry's ad $50 for 64MB. This may be a
good time to buy for those who need it.

mr mark and PMS thanks for your advice. I still haven't found my solution to my problem yet but I will still continue to look into the registry. There's a lot to look at there but I think it maybe time for my spring reformat and get rid of all the junk in the system. I tend to download a lot of things to try them out so I think that maybe part of the problem. I was hoping to just learn a little more about windows and how it works.
