Eric - So far as the UMTS Forum and 3GPP are concerned there is a UMTS 3G standard (even though the ITU has not ratified the standard) and a plan has been set to evolve the standard at a future date into "Release 2000" .

UMTS is the European version of W-CDMA; so far as I know this has not been in doubt for a long time. But that isn't the issue. It is the melding of the two major DS-CDMAs (UMTS and the Japanese version) into an ITU approved standard that has been the tough problem.

These six recommendations have been agreed under the fast-track approval procedure. Under this procedure, the draft text of a recommendation is circulated to all ITU-T members to determine whether the Study Group is to be assigned the authority to give it final approval ("decision") at its next meeting.

I've seen this at the ITU site, and the first time I read it, I read it the way I assume that they meant it to be read - that a standard will soon be chosen. But read it again - this is really a decision as to who can make a decision. This is humorous, but not exactly an indication that a standard is going to come immediately. Perhaps one will. Perhaps the Study Group is chomping at the bit. But I couldn't conclude that from the stuff I found at the ITU website.

Eric L: Thanks. Your update is detailed and persuasive.

I do not question that all that you point out is correct and accurate. And that reflects your intimate knowledge of the game and the state of play.

All I am suggesting is that even with everything lined up and ready to be tied with a ribbon, the worldwide ribbon has not been tied and the toasts drunk. As the old saying goes, there is many a slip between the cup and the lip.

We have learned from you the process is further along than I for one, realized. Much appreciate your filling us in on that.

Do you see this now as a slam dunk? Game over in June?

Best.
