Picked up Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash" yesterday. Having been away from the genre for quite a while, it is good to hear who the good new authors are. Thanks.

I got "The Burning City" as soon as it came off the press, although I haven't started it yet. I have Jerry Pournelle's website bookmarked. jerrypournelle.com. Now I have two unread novels kicking around! Guess I'll read the Niven/Pournelle first.

Like you say, sci-fi took a real downturn. It seems like it started in the early 80s, but I'm not sure. Niven and Pournelle's "Lucifer's Hammer" might have been the last novel I read before I walked away from the genre. I made a decision recently to read more authors who are actively writing, (been reading too many dead guys) and came to the conclusion that the field is distressingly thin. Tom Wolfe and Cormac McCarthy satisfy, but the current crop descends rapidly thereafter. I was heartened to find Pournelle's website and the discovery that not all sci-fi had gone down the path of mediocrity. Maybe we'll see a sci-fi renaissance!
