So do you believe Jesus existed? If so how would you describe him?

Well, I can't speak for Judeo Christianity since I am not of them. I, however, do find it interesting that a lot of non-Christian and non-Jewish people do feel comfortable speaking for them. I don't see the Christian culture or Jewish Culture shying away from the Universities.

The greatest scholars of my religion, have reported that their answer to questions about the universe or what ever is, "I don't know," at least 50% of the time. The most common advise given is seek the truth and seek peace in the truth. We are commanded to seek the truth in three places; 1) Our hearts. 2) Creation, and 3) The message(s) God has sent via his messengers. We are told the truth is always confirmable from one to the other. So, when we do scientific inquiry and we find some evidence of something and it also seems to makes sense that things work that way we accept it as truth (knowing it may be a transitory thing). When we doubt our observations because it doesn't seem to make sense that things work that way, we recheck our figures and facts to see if we have performed a proper observation. Likewise when we study the unseen we may read some scripture or wise saying or make observations of what is going on in creation and in our hearts find confirmation that it is sensible.

Actually that point should be common sense whether you write a particular religion or reference to God into it or not. A bigger question is what do we do with what we've found in our seekings. Some times we have found wonders and not done wonderful things with them.
