RETRACTION: Tornado Sighting changed to Tornado Watch

The following is copied from my post to Bill in the Gemstar folder. He found a flaw in my interpretation.

Unclewest, the increases in advertising revenue don't imply anything about Gorilladom to me. They do have significance about the Godzilla in Gemstar, but not the Gorilla. Just my way of looking at this stuff.

===================================

Bill,

You got me thinking and I've done more digging into those two press releases. When we pay close attention to the exact wording, the two are difficult to compare.

The press release about last year says they sold more than 1.5 million guides in the U. S. The more recent press release says they sold 1.6 million digital set-top boxes world-wide. Though I assume each contained a guide, I don't know how many they sold last year world-wide.

Where the recent press release says they "reached" 2 million TVs containing set-top boxes, I agree with you that we should interpret that to mean that they sold their two millionth TV containing a guide in Q1, not that they sold 2 million all in one quarter. Since we don't know from those press releases how many they sold last year, we don't yet know the importance of that data.

I'm hoping Stew or someone has reasonably immediate access to the critical data. Until I see it, I'm putting an official "tornado watch" into effect and retracting my "tornado sighting." Thanks much for alerting me to the issue you raised!

a suggestion for another indicator to watch .... advertising revs. they were up 400% sequentially last quarter ($200,000 to 800,000).

unclewest, I know you're on the road and going from memory, but advertising revenues were $400k in 2Q00 and $800k in 3Q00. This is a 100% sequential increase. Still, your point is valid since this is heady growth.
