Rumor has it the US Mint may issue a Proof collector's version of the coin in gold, which would further add to the public confusion.

As a long time numismatist, the "golden" dollar really bothers me. If a private company issued some type of "golden" medal and tried to sell it, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) would be at the door with an injunction to stop it. The government, however, can get away with it
