Corel Plans Asia Pacific HQ In Sydney 04/07/00

RELATED SYMBOLS: (MSFT)(CORL)

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, 2000 APR 7 (Newsbytes) -- By David
Frith, Computer Daily News. Canada's Corel Corporation
[NASDAQ:CORL] is to set up an Asia-Pacific headquarters in
Sydney, as it gears for a big push into the desktop Linux
scene, president/CEO Michael Cowpland has revealed during a
brief Sydney visit.

It will share offices with Inprise/Borland, subject of a
planned merger with Corel, reports online Australian news
service ITNews.

Cowpland told the news service around five percent of Corel
software sales worldwide in the first quarter of this year
were on the Linux platform.

Over the next two quarters, Linux sales should reach 10
percent of total revenue, said Cowpland. "Within a few
years we'll be 50/50 (Linux versus Windows)," he added.

"We'll probably do about US$20 million globally selling
Linux software this year," Cowpland said. This would equate
to under 10 percent of Corel's $250 million in global
revenues.

He added: "We want to make sure we're the king of the hill
on the Linux side. The market is now moving from Microsoft
proprietary to open web standards."

Corel is looking to take equity stakes in Linux vendors in
Australia and across the Asia-Pacific region, said Cowpland.

Patrina Gaskin has been named Corel's Sydney-based regional
manager, Pacific Rim, reporting to Sandie Overtveld,
Corel's vice president, Asia-Pacific, Middle East and
Africa.

Scott, did you by chance listen to Corel's conference call for last quarter's earnings? It was very clearly said that revenues for the next 2 quarters would be similar to the last. What makes you think that you are in any better position to second guess this statement by management? Corel is burning $19 million in cash per quarter. They are selling their GraphOn shares as fast as they can (did you see another 50k was reported sold?). They just bought more money losing graphics products. Currently, Corel has enough capital and marketable securities to last another 2-3 quarters, TOPS!

As for Corel's office in Sydney, Inprise has been successfully selling software in their SE Asia offices for years. It is one of their most profitable organizations and is also where much of the Inprise AppServer product was developed. Inprise/Borland has real presence in SE Asia. The Corel announcement is nothing but hype.

I wish somebody could name one positive thing that Inprise/Borland shareholders get from this merger. Please don't rattle off something about a MSFT settlement bringing in billions of dollars. It will be a long time (if ever) before anybody but a lawyer sees any $$.

Scott - I beg to differ.

There are no good earnings on the horizon, just alot of cowpatty empty promises (again). They better get rid of a whole bunch of folks to reduce their cash burn, and get some good management with some focus...but that will never happen while cowpatty is still there. The place is an organizational mess.... just look at all the experienced folks that just jumped ship, including the CFO...why?

re: linux suite - how much will the linux crowd be willing to pay? How may seats are there really? I can't see anything but selling it cheap - but then they have to support it, not like the low end graphics products. To who are they going to sell to? The enterprise customers don't trust Corel's longevity.... remember their OLAP product?
I feel badly for the Inprise crew.

re: Draw on linux - give me a break. Professional graphic artists use Macs and a few use PC's ... Linux? no way. Corel should be porting the products to the Mac, increase the quality of the product and fix their "cheap" image, but they just can't seem to get there. Maybe with their MetaCreations stuff they now have some incentive to get the Mac port done.

I just can't see anything positive, unless the place gets organized, gets some quality management, and gets rid of cowpatty.

good luck,
-Pete

Scott,

One more thing.... what caused the stock to go from 3 - 40+ bucks? Was it good business practices? Increasing market share? Higher margins? Earnings growth? No, it was pure Linux hype.

What's different? Oh ya, Corel Linux sales actually decreased since it's introduction.

Show me the money,
Pete
