You know, we haven't had a VIX spike above 40 since Aug 98, when the intraday high was ~61. And before that, the vix broke above 40 in OCT 97 when the intraday high was ~56. And those were great buying opportunities. I wonder if tomorrow we might see VIX > 40.

John,If VIX will not drop soon,that suggest we are in a bear market.For VIX is important not only high value ,but time as well.
If you have a spike to 30 for 1 day,this is not a problem,but if VIX is hovering between 27 1/2-31 for a long time,this is danger in my opinion.
