FiberNet borrows $75 million from Deutsche Bank AG, Toronto Dominion and Nortel to construct a metro transport network using a self healing SONET ring architecture and terminating in Manhattan high rise office buildings. FiberNet will sell primarily to telecom carriers and service providers. Carriers continue to deploy SONET. The ability of Nortel to finance construction of new networks gives it a competitive advantage over companies like Cienna.
