Parole is a simple problem. Talk to anyone in corrections (either guard or prisoner), and they will convince you that prisons become unmanageable without the promise of accelerated release. Without the ability to starve or torture prisoners (which the Constitution won't permit), the ability to bribe is the only thing left. Even the best run prisons in the United States are on the edge of rebellion. Prisoners are subjected to horrible punishments, but usually by the leaders of the prison gangs, less frequently by the guards. In many prisons the corrections officers live in fear and are controlled by the inmates. Many officers become criminals, drug smugglers, and sometimes torturers.
Anyone who thinks ha has a serious contribution to make to penal science might better learn something about the actual situation. There are plenty of opportunities for people to contribute their time to help prisoners and their families. There are always jobs open for corrections officers. One can easily learn what is actually going on. There is no need to shoot off your mouth. Learn something first.
