I can beat that story .. how about this one..

my mom opened up an account at etrade and when it was ready I told my mom to call them and get the username and password.. they gave her a user name but no password.. so I had her call back.. that person gave her the password.. she doesnt have a PC so I logged onto her account for her only to find that we had access to another family entire portfolio with SEVERAL linked accounts... hundreds of thousands of dollars just sitting there.. we could have bought a worthless penny stock and they would have lost everything (obviously that would be illegal but there are folks out there who might have done such a nasty thing)

anyway, I called etrade to report it (my mom was unreachable at the time) and the service rep told me there was NOTHING they could do because I was not on her account... I restated that we had access to someone else's accounts and that if they didnt take action I'd send an email to that family letting them know that Etrade was passing out there passwords... the Etrade rep said to me, "Are you threatening me!?" and I told her no, but that it was ridiculous that they were not going to take any action..

i then had to goto a meeting.. 4 hours later when I came back I STILL had access to that family's account.. they had NOT notified the family nor cancelled or reset their passwords..

by then my mom was home and we called Etrade together and spoke with their senior technician.. told him the problem and he immediately cancelled the other family's passwords... he then gave my mom the correct password for her account.. and said that for being so nice he was going to credit my mom with 3 free trades... (3 months later she still hasn't gotten the free trades).. In fact, she recently sent Etrade an email asking where the free credits were and they replied back asking for proof.. and since netiher of us wrote down the name she's not getting her credits. Some thankyou! As it was, this was actually the second account she opened because the first account they lost... they later found the application but lost the check that was included with it... so she had to pay for a cancelled check fee ... (etrade didnt offer even though it was their fault as she had proof of delivery and receipt).

Why do we still use Etrade? I don't know. Probably because their service is better than the other 3 OLBs we've tried. Anybody got any money saved up to start their own OLB? If so, let me know. I've designed helpdesks for some of the largest billion dollar companies in the world... take that experience and combine it with what I've learned from Etrade as to what NOT to do... I think our customer service would be the world's greatest.. lol

Anyway, thought I'd share... Etrade must have a powerful brand to have service this bad and still somehow retain its customers... reminds me of AOL when it first started..
Think I'll go buy some more Etrade stock. Seriously.
