Normally, a webhosting company assigns an IP address per domain account. It's not absolutely necessary, but that's how it is done.

If you can put 1,000 customers on one Linux server, why shouldn't you? See Pair Networks at pair.com. Their prices would be at least a hundred times higher if they had to deliver the same service on Windows 2000.

By the way: being able to handle many IP adresses efficiently is one facility that FreeBSD does better than Linux, and this makes FreeBSD the premium choice for large-scale webhosting services.
