Hitachi's VoIP reference design is currently available (Hitachi part number US7729VOIPDEV3) and uses Wind River Systems' VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS). Tool support includes Wind River Systems' Tornado to provide a complete working development environment for system designers. Other RTOS support such as Linux, Accelerated Technology, Inc.'s Nucleus+ and Microsoft's Window CE, will be available in the future.

I really like the wording of this press release, especially since it comes from Hitachi, not Wind. It almost reads like a passage out of the FM. As with most other VOIP plays, Wind was the initial OS designed in by the chip manufacturer. I can't think of a single vendor targeting the VOIP market that doesn't offer a port to VxWorks (I'm sure there probably are some; please let me know if you know of any). They may offer also ports to other OS's, but not at the exclusion of VxWorks.

In me next post, I will offer my gg analysis of the VOIP market.
