DRDRAM busses requires 4X the speed of DDR, to achieve the same bandwidth. You can jack the voltage up, and put it in a leading edge process to make up some of the difference, but there are always going to be cost, yield, and reliability issues associated with these measures.

The electrical issues associated with a bus running 4X as fast are also serious.

If only one memory port is required in a system, DRDRAM is an expensive solution relative to DDR. Someone in Intel's management chain made a very bad decision, and Intel hasn't figured out yet how to extract themselves from it.

Don't you think they wish they had stuck with SDRAM/DDR?

The termination problem for address and data lines on DDR main memory has got to be very nasty.

I think your point about the initial problems with the 820 based systems is dead on target. This situation is much worse for DDR due to the increase in number and length of the bus lines.
