As far as INTC is concerned, they wanted and still want to make sure that the bottleneck in a PC is always the CPU, so they can charge big premiums for faster and faster CPU's. I think they were looking beyond 1 GHZ when making the RMBS decision. I do not know if they erred as you ascertain, they still may win. If it was so simple, I doubt AMD would hesitate that long in launching their third fab (joint venture). Mind you, someone at INTC think that they are on the right track, they are investing some $7 B on Fabs upgrade and possibly a new fab.
