I would prefer lower rates with almost no deductions or credits. Maybe a flat tax, with total income times x % = your tax bill.

We were reasonably close in 1986 to that kind of system, but the politicians can't help themselves. They like the corrupt system of high tax rates, and a system of trading deductions and exceptions to rules for campaign contribution, votes or personal freebies.
