Jim,

It looks like Scumbria last stand will be latency. Of course, he is focusing on initial latency and not average system latency. All that counts is the average system latency.

Your last sentence is correct. The average system latency is largely independent of DRAM type. As your Samsung whitepaper pointed out, all DRAM cores are essentially the same.

An ideal system has a large L1 cache, a large onboard L2 cache, and low latency DRAM. It is called T-Bird.

Jim,

Here is what AMD is really worried about

I read the article, and it appeared to me like Intel was worried about VIA building DDR chipsets for Willy. I didn't see any mention of AMD in the article.

Jim,

Here is a nice benchmark for you:

jc-news.com

The 1GHz Athlon 133 MHz SDRAM system beats the PIII DRDRAM system by about 33% on the Molecular Dynamics benchmark.

Thanks to pgerassi for the pointer.

Jim,

Here is a nice article explaining the relative importance of latency vs. bandwidth.

tomshardware.com

Please, no knee-jerk comments about the site which the article is posted on. ;^) The article is quite accurate.
