Sam: Hedge funds in trouble? When LTCM went bankrupt, it was reported that there were 400 hedge funds in the US -- LTCM was bailed out in part to prevent a run on the other 399. Does anybody know where there is data on hedge funds or how we can include their situation in our understanding of this situation? It will dawn on people at some point that this could be a real problem.

One of the things that helped in the wake of October 1987 was that some of the big-name public co's announced stock buybacks, giving investors some sense of their confidence in the ultimate value of their own shares.

I would not be suprised to see some of this occur again over the next few mos.
