Reminiscences of a Stock Operator by James Lefevre (pen name of Jesse Livermore) is by far the best. Kate Staley's book is the basic stuff, which is fine. Howard Schillit's got a book out called Financial Schenanigans, which helps digest financial statements. His CFRA (Center for Financial Research & Analysis studies are pretty good, but no cheap.
Beyond that I would look to Pink, Myself, TheTruthSeeker, Pluvia & Anthony for ideas on how it all works (some braggadocio, but great real time learning experience).

As for active Market Makers, I mean the amount of MM's involved day to day. If wholesalers drop a stock, the spreads will invariable widen and the cost of doing business go up. You should watch spreads on a daily basis or weekly, intraday is infoorverload.
