american debt now will cause less spending later...
americans will have to save more to pay off their debts so they will have even less money to spend and will be less willing to spend than japanese...

Carl, good to hear from you. The illusion of wealth disappears when the stock market tanks so people will spend less and save more. Two trillion dollars in paper wealth disappeared recently. I think the record mutual fund inflow was $ 39 billion in a month. Once the market stays down for a period of time people will reduce spending and be reluctant to add to their staggering debt loads and no amount of printing money will change that. mike
