Eurostocks slide early in broad selloff By Huw Jones LONDON, April 17 (Reuters) - European bourses tumbled more than three percent in opening trade on Monday as investors reacted to Friday's rout on Wall Street. The broad, early selloff was generally less heavy than the four to five percent opening slide anticipated across the broad. Old and new economy shares were equally hit, with media and consumer cyclicals down more than six percent. Retailers, techs, telecoms and healthcare were off four to five percent. Philips Electronics was Europe's biggest blue chip decliner, off eight percent. British Telecom (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: BT.L) and Vodafone AirTouch (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: VOD.L) slid more than six percent. The Eurotop 300 index fell 3.86 percent, while the narrower Euro STOXX 50 index shed 2.88 percent. The losses began to deepen by about 30 minutes into the trading day, with London's FTSE 100 index off four percent, the Paris CAC-40 down 4.5 percent, and Frankfurt's DAX off four percent, though indices appeared to be stabilising at these levels. ``It was clear the market was going to be marked down sharply, and it was clear the market was expensive so we have not seen a huge surprise today,' said Kevin Gardiner, a European equity strategist at J P Morgan. ``I think we need to see the market fall a bit further, say five to ten percent, to make it worthwhile for people to come back in,' Gardiner added. ``We would be very wary still of new economy shares and the appetite for risk at the moment is minimal.' Investors were also waiting for Neuer Markt trading to start in German Internet service provider T-Online , Europe's biggest ISP float to date. Pre-market trading in T-Online on agency broker Instinet was at 28 euros per share, just above the 27 euros offer price. Among the very few blue chip gainers in Europe, German steel company ThyssenKrupp was up two percent.
