Well this is a pretty complex discussion

I think Eric was concerned that what I was placing emphasis on was a bit ahead of where his managers are.

Eric would like to see directory based apps and an internet operating system be complimentary. Let one strategy compliment the other.

I agreed.

The struggle within Novell appears to be over who can best execute strategies and who can really do the job of turning the vision into commercial products to sell.

==========

Today there was a major article in the New York Times about internet caching. Both Inktomi and Akamai were mentioned as head to head competitors. Novell got one sentence. It's obvious to me that nobody in management even talked to the person writing this major article.

Why?

It is not a question of vision or motivation as you have been trying to say it is. Instead it is a question of execution.

You can't put the wrong person in charge of a strategy and then expect that strategy to succeed. That only happens in Hollywood movies.
