MCI drops out of UK spectrum
bidding war

By Bob Brewin
04/14/2000 MCI WorldCom dropped out of the bidding for
next-generation wireless spectrum in the United
Kingdom as individual bids edged over the $8 billion
mark and total bids for countrywide broadband licenses
topped $30.6 billion.

Vodafone Airtouch PLC led the bidding with an offer of
$8.1 billion, topping a $7.9 billion bid made by British
Telecom. Communications analysts and users have
started to express concerns about how the the battling
companies expect to pay for the spectrum, with
U.S.-based global users saying the pricing has already
become too rich for them.

On Wednesday, analysts at Gartner Group Inc. predicted
that should the same frenzied bidding pattern develop
in the U.S. next-generation spectrum auction slated to
start in June, total winning prices could hit the $100
billion mark (see story). Earlier in the week, the Federal
Communications Commission set a bid floor of $450
million for just one-fifth of the total wide-band
spectrum it plans to auction.
