Well, the work requirement is where we have headed, in a "soft version", that accepts job training and looking for work, and has exemptions and extensions. In any case, the ideal is to expect something of able recipients (I include psychologically able recipients) beyond a relatively brief emergency period. Why that sounds "Soviet", I can't quite fathom. Employability is often a matter of learning to get to work on time, and how to get along with supervision. Yes, the government can provide structure and discipline by at least a modest work requirement, acting as the employer of last resort.

I am skeptical of government propaganda programs, but I think that these issues come up, and abstinence should be encouraged when they do.

I am only acquainted second hand with Olasky. Yes, I think he addresses the social dynamic somewhat, and I am myself sensitive to it, but it does not matter much. His main point is that high- risk behavior that the middle class mostly could handle, like promiscuity and drug abuse, was devastating to the poor, who were more likely to deal inadequately with risk factors and less likely to have the means to handle adverse consequences.......

Steven, res-<<What are you going to do to employ people with no employable skills?>>

If someone has been on welfare for more than 1 year, and is healthy, they should work cleaning the parks or streets once or twice a week for their welfare check. America isn't the Philippines Steven. Jobs are plentiful for those willing to suck up a little, (self imposed) humiliation and work. If you're an able bodied healthy American receiving a welfare check after 1 year, for the most part, you're simply lazy. Why should other hard working Americans pay for your lazy lifestyle?

Conservatives measure compassion by how many people no longer need welfare. Liberals by how much the program grows. Big big, difference. Do you think welfare reform, ending welfare after two years for able bodied people, would have ever been approved if the Democrats still controlled Congress? Not a chance.

One of the real reasons unemployment is so low is because of welfare reform.

Some people are just plain lazy Steven, and we as a society shouldn't encourage the behavior. We should also look closely at a system which sometimes rewards people for not working.

Until the election in 92 liberal Democrats demogoged the issue so completely dialogue was impossible. You say you're a moderate and want dialogue? Where was the dialogue for welfare reform, (starving children) and so much more coming from supposedly moderate Democrats. I'll tell you where. Silenced from the politically correct crowd that's where. You will never get dialogue from liberal Democrats Steven. Nearly the only group dialoguing for meaningful change are conservatives.

Where is the Democratic dialogue regarding school choice? Same thing, silenced by the NEA.

Michael
