Hi John Walliker; This is an example of a tradeoff. With registered DIMMs, you get 3 usable slots, and can therefore put more memory in.

With unregistered memory, you get lower latency by a half clock or so.

The limitation is due to the extra capacitance associated with the unregistered DIMMs. All easily calculable. Very easy to make the simulations that ensure signal integrity.

It would be embarrassing only if they tried to ship the board without the limitations, then had a fiasco, and then suggested limiting the number of RIMMs in a system.
