John,
My original mail was primarily intended to point out that I don't see analysts downgrade Intels EPS for 2000 from what it currently is. (or more importantly, if they do, then it shouldn't be too hard to meet/beat those estimates).

John, re ...one of the best run companies in the world...

I've been very impressed with your posts in the pasts, especially the coolness with which you handle market overreaction.

This time, I think you are overreacting. It can be devastating to costs/margins to over build capacity (especially if you own 80% of the market). Yeah, management under-shot, but nobody's perfect at this game. What Intel has always been superb at is scrambling to recover. I continue to be confident that they will this time as well.

John, it's possible the uncertainties surrounding Y2K threw them an unusual curve ball in accurately predicting demand last year.

Seems to me nearly everyone felt at the beginning of the year businesses would hold off purchases of new computers and wait till the new year. Then around August everyone changed their mind and went on a buying spree in order to replace their old computers before the year was up. While they struggled to catch up with business demand, consumers decided the differential between 600 mhz and 200 mhz was enough to upgrade. And Intel got hit with both barrels.

I can think of far worse problems for a business to have.

Michael

Hi John, Re : "I'm also looking at a company that I have always thought of as one of the best run companies in the world. And I wondering if it still is."
-----

I can understand your frustration. Intel's definitely on the hot seat this year with respect to delivering products (for operational earnings).

Having said that, a well-managed company is one which consistently meets earnings (or, delivers on reasonably high earnings).

Yes, I think INTC is a tad bit on the higher side, as I said in a post the other day, but I'm in it for the LT with the bulk of it. Am decreasing a bit to increase cash & MSFT and to leave some on the side for ST stuff (to buy on the dips).
