Peck said Intel is having trouble in its transition to make
more of its chips using 0.18-micron technology, which etches
thinner lines for each circuit. That could open the door for rival
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. to nab business.
``AMD will be able to waltz in and take more market share,'
said Peck. Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro last week
reported earnings that were more than double analyst forecasts.

Kap - RE: "Hmm, a packaging problem. But yields are fine and demand is out of this world."

Intel's guidance has become a JOKE lately. First, they said end of January supply will meet demand, then they said end of Q1, and NOW they are saying by end of Q2! The probably knew "interest and other" would be greater than 500M in Q1 when they reported Q4. Now they are saying a staggering amount of $725M! for Q2. What will it come in at? $900M? $1B?

They didn't underestimate processor demand - they OVER estimated their capability to go from wafer to final product. That's the problem. And they keep saying supply will get better, but it hasn't yet. And they are STILL committed to DRDRAM on desktops! Maybe they decided that when RamBUST's stock price was near $500. Those warrants to buy shares at $10 probably looked REALLY good then.

On the Intel thread, the investors without blinders on see what we see. The ones with blinders think Intel will crush AMD later this year.

I wonder what the market will see. If Intel happens to go down tomorrow, I don't think it will singlehandedly bring the Naz down; too many other good earnings reports.

Kap <Hmm, a packaging problem. But yields are fine and demand is out of this world.>

So all of these fine MPU are awaiting a packaging solution? This is kindof rough as the depreciation rate on MPU is so steep... but at least they don't take up much space!
