You are right on both counts.

I have also heard privately from reliable sources that a number of bigger players got wiped out in the recent downturn.

Margin is a tool like any other to achieve leverage. Futures traders use tremendous margin. Buying a house with 2 percent down is also tremendous leverage. The key is the use of the tool, not the tool itself.

I just thought that folks may have lost sight of the need to manage the tool.
